Job Description

Position Overview:

The Radio Journalism Trainer provides technical support to project partners and is actively involved in the planning and delivery of the project’s capacity building of radio partners and journalists in all areas of radio production and newsroom management. This position will work under the supervision of the Senior Journalism Trainer and in close collaboration with the Media Business Advisor.

Description of main duties and responsibilities:

Assessment

  • Support an assessment of the skill level of selected radio stations and throughout the project ensure that training, mentoring, and resource creation addresses their professional development and learning needs.
  • Support a technical needs assessment and latter procurement to meet community radio stations broadcast, studio and production equipment needs.

Training & Mentorship:

  • Maintain high level of technical knowledge of radio broadcasting and management.
  • Design training and mentoring programs to increase the quality of content production, create new programming and increase audience consumption.
  • Convey knowledge of innovative communications tools.
  • Act as a primary liaison and point-of-contact for training participants and/or host organizations and groups sponsoring such trainings.
  • Plan, coordinate, and direct radio training activities per program plans including communicating to relevant staff the training schedules for planned activities.
  • Train journalists in radio program scripting in formal and informal settings to enable them to produce stories journalism standards of quality.
  • Lead virtual and in-person training sessions for participants based on training agendas and content which are conducive to participant-led learning processes, incorporating adult-learning methodologies and trainer best practices.
  • Provide ongoing mentoring to radio journalists, editors, and media managers to increase knowledge and technical skills.

Support for Content, Resource & Curriculum Development

  • Review the content developed by radio training participants and ensure archiving of all radio broadcast related content.
  • Coordinate production and travel grants for selected radio trainees and journalists and ensure that the public interest stories developed are of high quality.
  • Collaborate with the project team and partners to identify skill gaps, needs and resources.

Administration:

  • Maintain and build active relationships with journalists and radio outlets throughout Zambia.
  • Contribute to the writing and compiling of program reporting, including quarterly reports and other project-related reports.
  • Provide technical support to Internews subgrant partners implementing journalist training capacity and mentoring programs.
  • Help track project metrics that serve to measure the success of project activities.
  • Draft project-specific content for internal and external communications, including blog posts and programmatic highlights.
  • Draft, review and provide input to project work plans, proposals, and annual reports
  • Completing other duties as assigned.

Qualifications, Skills and Abilities:

  • Degree in journalism, media management, communications or related field.
  • Minimum of 7 years work experience as a senior journalist and at least 2 years training media professionals.
  • Experience designing and facilitating journalism training and production to professionals and students.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills, ability to prioritize workload and multi-task in a fast-paced environment and strong track record of meeting deliverables.
  • Excellent soft skills, including interpersonal and communication skills, with a problem-solving attitude and as a self-starter who works both independently and as a collaborative team player.

Must be self-reliant, resourceful, good problem-solver, good humored, and flexible.

Ability to travel within and spend extended time in the field, with limited facilities, often under harsh conditions

Zambian nationality required.
