Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

The Literacy Deputy Manager is responsible for developing and maintain literacy training programs to increase the capacity of teachers and other staff in all areas of literacy. The position holder shall primarily focus on training and mentoring staff on research-based literacy instruction and develop a scope and sequence for literacy training plans according to the needs and implementation strategy for the staff. They will work collaboratively with the other members of the  team as well as Program Managers and the  school leadership team to provide support and growth in the area of literacy.

  • The Deputy Program Manager of Literacy reports to the Staff Development Program Manager.
  • The Deputy Program Manager of Literacy works directly with the Staff Development Program Manager to ensure quality education for Legacy Academy students by creating professional development plans and coaching teachers and school administrators regarding literacy instruction, programs, and assessments.
  • The Deputy Program Manager of Literacy serves as a consultant, coach, collaborator, presenter, and facilitator within and across the Legacy Academy schools providing professional development for the implementation and sustainment of literacy education.

Typical Responsibilities – Key End Results of Position

Design Professional Development and Instructional Products for Staff

  • Create engaging training module designs and interactive products for staff that adhere to the principles of adult learning, align with professional learning standards, and cover a wide range of topics related to literacy.
  • Design trainings and instructional products using research-based learning theory.
  • Create training modules on methods for implementing and maintaining effective literacy instruction and assessment and facilitate trainings regularly.
  • Provide literacy training to primary and secondary teachers, heads, campus coordinators, deputy program managers, and any other applicable staff.
  • Build capacity for proven innovative research-based curriculum, instruction, and assessment based on best practices in literacy.
  • Develop the knowledge, skills, and abilities of staff to effectively implement literacy priorities.

Evaluation of Literacy Training Implementation

  • Monitor staff development efforts in literacy to ensure implementation by staff that will lead to student success.
  • Evaluate training programs that address growth in the capacity of literacy instruction to improve student performance.
  • Build capacity to monitor and inform improvements of classroom literacy practices through observation, feedback, and reflection.
  • Get regular feedback from teachers and leaders regarding the needs and implementation progress of literacy instruction, programs, and assessments.
  • Provide accurate data to evaluate the effects of literacy professional development.

Build a Commitment to High Student Performance in Literacy

  • Provide guidance and support to Program Managers to develop literacy goals that are aligned with Family Legacy’s mission, beliefs, and goals.
  • Develop capacity of school leadership to build a commitment for high student performance by being a catalyst for change, and articulating, implementing, and sustaining a vision for literacy education.
  • Build a commitment among staff to increase literacy skills in students by being a catalyst for change and articulation, implementing, and sustaining a vision for literacy learning.
  • Implement and sustain a collaborative coaching approach for school leaders regarding literacy instruction and differentiate support for staff and school leaders as needed.
  • Assist school leaders in understanding the alignment of literacy instruction with the Student Progress Model goals.

Research-based Best Practices in Literacy

  • Identify research-based best practices in literacy instruction, determine the scope and sequence for training on these practices, and develop training modules for short- and long-term literacy instruction goals based on current models.
  • Stay up to date with current best practices in literacy through research and contact with other literacy trainers and professional organizations.

Management

  • Manage Literacy Coaches who report to the Deputy Program Manager of Literacy.
  • Provide feedback to Primary and Secondary Literacy Leads and share this feedback with their supervisors.

Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviors required to achieve role’s objectives

  • Grade 12 certificate
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education or high performance in literacy instruction as a staff member or leader
  • Preferred Master’s Degree in a related field
  • Minimum 7 years’ experience teaching or training in the area of literacy
  • Preferred leadership experience at the school level or facilitating professional development
  • Fluency in English spoken and written
  • Competency in computer skills (MS Word, Excel, etc.)
  • Valid Zambia Driver’s License
