Job Description

The ideal candidate would be an early career conservationist, passionate about wildlife and determined to protect and restore natural habitats. The candidate would have a good knowledge of the fauna and flora, the interaction between both, and the threats that they face. As the position mainly consists of field work, the candidate must be physically fit, not afraid of encountering wild animals and comfortable with basic living conditions.

PRIORITIES THAT WE’LL TRUST YOU WITH

  • Provide support to the Biodiversity Department Head in planning field missions
  • Manage field equipment and material, ensure that it is well maintained and remain in good working conditions, verify the settings before each survey, report issues and suggest solutions to challenges encountered
  • Implement transect surveys in line with monitoring plans
  • Deploy camera trap arrays, visit them at fixed intervals, and extract them at the end of the survey
  • Supervise the data collection by field assistants and scouts, manage data download from devices, data entry and raw data sharing internally
  • Conduct survey debriefings and produce reports
  • Assist in refresher trainings for field assistants and scouts
  • Liaise with key stakeholders in the field
  • Collaborate with relevant departments and the SMART Coordinator to ensure good quality biodiversity data is being collected during general patrols.
  • Contribute to the improvement of SMART configurable models for the surveys
  • Coordinate and participate in biodiversity related trainings and community engagement activities as needed

ALLIANCE BUILDERS WANTED

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in any field relevant to biodiversity monitoring and conservation, with at least a minimum of 2 years’ experience
  • Conversant with computer programs such as MS Office
  • A good command of English (oral and written) and as well as local languages will be an advantage
  • Demonstrated team leadership
  • Experience in conducting wildlife and botanical surveys with excellent navigation skills
  • Exhibiting a willingness in working and living in basic field conditions for long periods, including camping in wild places, with frequent travel between sites
  • Experience in the use of SMART (Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool), with First aid training and a good knowledge of the bush (animal identification and tracking, animal behavior, botany) will be an added advantage
  • Experience in community outreach and sensitization programs desirable
  • Experience in liaising with GRZ officials, community leaders and other partners
